LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive health care strike over wages and staffing shortages headed into its final day on Friday without a deal between industry giant Kaiser Permanente and the unions representing the 75,000 workers who picketed this week. “No health care worker wants to go on strike,” Caroline Lucas, the coalition's executive director, said Thursday. The strike comes in a year when there have been work stoppages within multiple industries, including transportation, entertainment and hospitality. The health care industry alone has been hit by several strikes this year as it confronts burnout from heavy workloads — problems greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House on Thursday said President Joe Biden “always” supports union members who choose to strike when asked about the demonstration by Kaiser workers.

Washington CNN —Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy described the case against former President Donald Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents as “almost a slam dunk” and said he thinks Trump should drop out of the 2024 presidential race. They come as the various charges against Trump continue to dominate the GOP primary, with the former president widely viewed as the party’s front-runner. “If it’s proven, we may have a candidate for president who’s been convicted of a crime,” Cassidy said. When pressed on whether he would vote for Trump should he become the GOP nominee, Cassidy demurred. “I’m going to vote for a Republican,” Cassidy said.

Claims that Anthony Fauci is the son of Mother Theresa are false, contrary to some posts on social media. Similarly, there is no evidence to support online suggestions that Mother Theresa was a child trafficker. Reuters, however, found no reports supporting the claim that she sold babies or was involved in child trafficking (bit.ly/3xuRIWY). Fauci did not respond to a request for comment when claims about his supposed relation to Mother Theresa were first debunked by Reuters in 2021. Claims that Anthony Fauci is the son of Mother Theresa, or that Mother Theresa was a child trafficker, are false.

The Ukrainian president added that the soldier told him that "many (of) his brothers, this system saved." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered President Joe Biden “all my appreciation” as the two met at the White House on Wednesday, before the wartime leader was set to address a joint meeting of Congress. In the Oval Office meeting, Biden confirmed that the U.S. will be giving Ukraine the Patriot Missile battery the country has requested to counter Russian missile and air attacks. When his large motorcade of black SUVs pulled up the White House, the president and first lady Jill Biden greeted the Ukrainian president before heading inside. Zelenskyy, wearing his now-familiar army-green casual attire, handed Biden the medal in a wooden display case, giving details about the soldier who he said wanted it delivered to Biden. “Well, undeserved, but much appreciate it,” Biden responded, before calling his counterpart “the man of the year” in reference to the Time magazine accolade that Zelenskyy received.
CNN —The Covid-19 pandemic has carried a key lesson for public health officials, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Monday: When talking to Americans, be clear that science is often a moving target. “Hopefully, we could have been more on top of appreciating the dynamic nature of how things change, thinking that it wasn’t aerosol spread in the beginning, and then you find out it is aerosol spread. Experts agree that the virus almost certainly jumped into humans from an animal market in China but that they may never know for sure. “It’s possible that there was a lab leak,” Fauci said. Fauci criticized China’s controversial zero-Covid policy, saying shutdowns “should always be a temporary phenomenon, not a long-range strategy,” and should be done with an end point in mind, such as buying time to secure PPE or provide vaccinations.
Social media users are sharing a claim that President Joe Biden “announced” a plan to cheat on the U.S. midterms by dumping ballots in a Nov. 2, 2022 speech. But nowhere in the speech does Biden “announce” cheating or dumping ballots during the midterm elections. Specifically, mail-in ballots can start being counted ranging from before election day, on election day before polls close and after polls close on election day, depending on the state (here). Reuters has previously reported on why official U.S. election vote counts may not be reported until after election day and can take weeks to verify (here). There are multiple layers of security in place for mail-in ballots, from affidavits and signature verification to witness signatures and notarized ballots.
